Understanding Material Design — Material design is a new system design for android applications that was introduced six years ago through Google I/O 2014. It was soon followed by the launch of Android Lollipop as well as SDK L ver. 21 on August 2014. Material Design is known for its design that’s flat and paper-like, sharp, brave, and perfectionistic.
Google hopes that with Material Design, all of the applications that uses Android as their platform can follow this standard for the sake of accomplishing application design that is beautiful and easy to use. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of applications that haven’t complied with this design standard from Google.
Even so, there are some Android developers that’s following this standard by Google. If you’re a developer yourself and are developing an application, this article will be very well suited for you.
Whereas for its development, Google have released AppCompat 21+ library support, making it possible for us to create an application using Material Design on devices that haven’t used OS 5.0 Lollipop, because this design originally only support Android version 5 and up when it was first launched.
This Material Design are expanding step by step to all kinds of web products, giving a consistent user experience throughout platforms and applications. Google have also released Application Programming Interface for third party developers to integrate design language into their own application.
The appearance of Material Design itself is not to change the design interface massively, and instead a step towards a new visually representative langue, meaning to realize visualization so that it resembles its real form, whether it’s textures, shadows, or lightning.
Before Material Design exists, the developer that’s focused on User Interface and User Experience prefers three dimensional shapes using lots of gradients, giving it the impression of emerging from the screen. But with most cases, design like it is considered old and dull, making it not as popular as its used to be. Meanwhile Material Design tends to use solid colour without gradient, and only using minimal lightning giving it a simple and elegant feel to it.
The Purpose of Material Design
- Creating
Material Design creates a visual language that’s combining the principle of a good design with innovation as well as chances of technology and science.
2. Combining
Material Design helps develop a system that’s combining user experience across all platforms, devices, and input methods.
3. Adapting
Material Design expands the visual language and giving it a foundation that is flexible for innovation and expression.
Principles in Material Design
- Bold, graphic, intentional.
Material Design includes printed media, typography, grid, space, scale, colour and imagery in order to understand the meaning and focus to the listeners.
2. A Flexible Foundation
Material Design system is designed with a base code where it’s possible to apply components, plugins, and design elements without hassle.
3. Cross — Platform
Material Design retains its distinct user interface across all platforms, using the same components for Android, iOS, Flutter and Web.
